This is a long over due book review from Thomas Nelson and Booksneeze. I actually finished the book last May, but have been reading other material and have not felt the need to get this posted. Thomas Nelson is releasing a book this week that I would like to read and therefore I need to finish this book to get my hands on one that I am looking forward to reading. Without further ado...
You know a good book when you give it away to someone else. This is one of those books. Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me: A Memoir of Sort is a fascinating and gripping tale about growing up with an alcoholic father who lived a secret life and what the author does to gain support and approval from his dad.
The reality of this book strikes close to home and reflects many homes within the families of youth ministry that I have witnessed over the last several years. We all long to know that our father loves us and that love from our earthly father can dramatically influence our view of God as our Father for better or worse.
Ian shares his story with transparency, honesty and humor that captures the reader. I like how Ian comes to wrestle with the great love of God as our Father. His writes about a time that his family was on vacation and his children were jumping from the ledges of this cliff into the water below. As he reflects upon knowing his great love for His children he comes to realize that God is asking the same of us. To trust. To jump. To know that our Father will not let us fall, he will be there for us when we jump. Knowing the great love of our heavenly father can be difficult, but the journey to find the love and know that love is a one worth following. Ian captures his journey and leaves the reader longing to go on that same journey.
