Reality is Disconnected

Seems like there is a trend and a buzz word going around at the beginning of this New Year about be connected and how individuals are actually unplugging and disconnecting. One friend recently wrote on Facebook that beginning January 1st he would no longer be on Facebook and you can reach him by phone or email.

Terry Gilliam made this statement on the 99 Percent blog"...it's about how people are becoming so disconnected from reality even though we live in a time when everything is connected."

I like the idea of being disconnected and deep within I long to disconnect from Facebook.. At the same time Facebook is a tool for a youth minister and as with any tools I have to know when to use them and when not to use them or be disconnected. The tension lies in going to the tool shed to often.

I am currently focusing in on only checking Facebook a 2-3 of times a day and not being online at all before 9am or after 9pm. This is a step for me to use these tools more effectively and trust me I have a long way to go.

Do you think is being disconnected a trend and buzz word for 2012?

How do you manage the tension of being connected, but grounded in reality?
