Utensils and Cups

Our eyes are the source to the soul and at a very young age we begin to receive messages that influence our behavior for years to come. For example, our oldest daughter is a little over two and most of her eating utensils and cups have very simple message. This message often comes in the form of a princess or a mouse. It seems innocent, sweet, and cute now, but at some point this subliminal message will turn into a desire, want, and need. Good, bad, right or wrong it is reality. (Check out this information about marketing and teens from the Center for Parent Youth Understanding.)

Based on the blog post yesterday  how do we respond knowing our lives often respond to what our eyes see and our hearts crave?

Here are 3 quick ideas and conversation starters for your family to implement:

  • Read Matthew 6 together.
  • Process what is coming in your house via any screen, magazine, book, or catalog.
  • What course of action can you take to allow more "light" to come in vs darkness?
This is a tension that exist for me because I can easily want, desire, and need things from Craigslist, but I am trying to monitor how much time I spend looking at anything versus my hearts desire for God. What utensils are you using? Is the cup you are drinking out of pure?
