What is the heart of the matter?

I did not grow up with the Eagles, but I have enjoyed watching their concerts on DVD with some of my best friends including my father-in-law and Jessica. I remember a car ride back in high school with my brother-in-law cruising the back country of Texas to their greatest hits. This is a song we reflected on over a year ago in our small group and I wanted to share this today. Below are a few of the lyrics that echo true today:

The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I knew, Im learning again
Ive been tryin to get down
To the heart of the matter
But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think its about forgiveness
Forgiveness

These times are so uncertain
Theres a yearning undefined
And people filled with rage
We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age?
The trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness
Theyre the very things - we kill I guess
Pride and competition
Cannot fill these empty arms
