Why do people finish a bachelors and then get a masters degree?
Why do people finish a masters and then get a PhD?
Why do people finish tons of school and then get certifications and continued credits?
Here are a few reasons that I have observed within myself and observations I have made from other peoples comments about continued education. (This may be more of a top ten of asking oneself, why do I need this degree or certification.)
- Education is often about earning more money.
- You hear experience is what matters, so why get another diploma.
- Ones degree does not necessarily equate more money.
- Degrees are often about an ego and image complex.
- Can one excel in his or her passion without more debt?
- The piece of paper on the wall can become a mask.
- Knowledge or degrees does not mean that you are good at what you do.
- People are longing to be validated, for some education is how one gets validated.
- Initials after ones name may look good, but did you make a difference to the person who will be seeing those initials.
- Why?
I have enjoyed school and I am developing a deeper passion for others, but slowing down to look at the big picture is needed and required before one continues in higher education.
Then sometimes you may have fallen into the same boat I did. Graduated with a degree that is not highly recognized in any field (What can you do with Humanities?). Then get a teacher certification and later realize how amazing teaching and coaching really is. Then realize you are good with people and listening to others and pursue a counseling degree. Either way all the roads are coming together and this appears to be a common road for many until one gets settled down in the career he or she loves.
