What defines a leader?

I picked up the book True North the other day at the library. From my understanding the author, Bill George is the former CEO of Medtronic and is a follower of Christ.

Today in North America we struggle with what a leader is and what a leader does.

Well many people who say that a leader leads...really?

Because one has a position of leadership does not mean they are leading.

Just because I am a youth minister and I am in a position to lead does not mean I am leading.

Because someone may be the director of an organization does not necessarily equate to leading.

We have assumed position equals leader. This is not the case.

The quick intro of the book defines authentic leadership as:

• Pursuing purpose with passion.
• Practicing solid values.
• Leading with heart.
• Establishing enduring relationships.
• Demonstrating self-discipline.
  

The books premise is that one needs to have these qualities to be an authentic leader.
