I picked up the mail this evening and received one of those phony checks for a few dollars, this one was for $9.25. What can I use $9.25 for? I could buy two fast food meals or buy nine songs off iTunes. $9.25 would support a child in many Third World countries for half of the month through
Christian Relief Fund. These checks we receive in the mail are great at first site, until one reads the fine print. "By cashing this check you automatically enroll in our special program." What is special about a company's advertising that they have to hide behind deception? Must be a 'real special' program for a company to give me $9.25 now, only to charge me $9.25 each month for the rest of my life.
How often do we do this in our relationships? Sometimes we only tell the truth that needs to be heard, but keep something hidden in the small print. There are people who lead a deceptive life and try to hide information in the small print of deception to make a small gain in life. The small print often does not get revealed until later. However, the 'real' truth will always come out sooner or later. In the case of phony checks the truth does not come out until the next bank statement or credit card bill. We are better off to lead a life of "truthful lips" because true words "endure forever" (Proverbs 12:19).
Great post, Lantz. There was a time back in my 20s that I'd change long-distance companies every time one sent me a $50 check to change service. That was before cell phones eliminated the need for long distance. :)
